Dieter Brummer rose to prominence in the 1990s as Shane Parrish in the Australian serial opera Home and Away. However, the glitter that comes with celebrity was short-lived because the star had to deal with the disadvantages of popularity on an ongoing basis.
His character went through several stories, including Shane proposing to Angel (played by Melissa George) while they were still in school. Angel was briefly paralyzed after being driven over by Alf (played by Ray Meagher) and knocked from her motorcycle.
Shane recovered from his injuries but died from septicaemia. Dieter once stated that his and Melissa’s on-screen romance was merely excellent acting. “We may have been love interests on the show, but the chemistry was far from real!” he told Woman’s Day. “Mel was incredibly ambitious right from the start,” he noted. She didn’t seem to have much time for the cast of Home And Away. In public, we had to look like the cutest couple ever. It wasn’t like anything else on the screen. It was all on the screen.”
After leaving Home and Away, he went on to appear in Underbelly, The Golden Mile, Neighbours, Winners & Losers and Medivac. He was featured on many covers of teen magazines and even won two TV Logie awards. His last television appearance was in 2014 as he turned away from the limelight to focus on his own life. He once revealed he struggled to adjust to life after finding fame.
In 2018, he told Australian TV’s The Fame Game, “It can be very fickle.” You’re hot one minute and not the next. You’d just have to deal with it in whatever way you could.” “I think I’d experienced so much fame during those years on Home And Away that I just wanted to take a break from it and literally try and experience a life as Joe Bloggs and live as normal people do,” he stated.
At one point, Dieter resolved to live “normally” and launched a window cleaning service. In 2010, Dieter told TV Tonight, “People say I’m just a window cleaner, but it’s a lot more involved than that.” Working at heights is a very specialized trade.
“I just wanted to get some real-life experience, but I’d always planned on returning to the acting game at some point.” Unfortunately, the New South Wales government banned all construction projects just days before he was supposed to start another window cleaning work due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Then, in mid-2021, he was tragically discovered dead at his home, aged 45, after committing suicide. His grieving pals spoke out, saying he “wasn’t going to be on this earth for long” as his acting career came to an end. A crew member who worked with Dieter on the 2010 film Underbelly: The Golden Mile, in which he played a corrupt police detective, claimed they had the “strong impression he had demons” when they first met on set.
According to the Daily Mail, “he had friendships with co-stars while shows were filming, but he wasn’t the type of guy to keep in touch once the show wrapped.”He was a shy, reclusive individual. When I first met Dieter, I had the impression he wouldn’t be here for long. You simply had that impression.”
