Since 1997, Dominic Brunt, a star of the ITV serial opera Emmerdale, has played the endearing role of Paddy Kirk.
Prior to the public falling in love with his depiction of Paddy Kirk on ITV, actor Dominic Brunt recalled the event that forever altered his life.
The soap actor has been a part of Emmerdale for more than 20 years, but this year he received his first-ever nomination for a National Television Award.
Following his wife Chas Dingle’s affair, fans witnessed the character deal with a sad mental health narrative.
The 53-year-old admitted that he was anxious about attending the ceremony, but that he was overjoyed to have been nominated in the first place.
I’m anxious, but I’ll try to relax and just enjoy seeing myself on the big screen,” he remarked.
“I’m pretty excited about it. If I don’t win, it doesn’t matter. Although that sounds corny, I really do mean it.
When I obtained the position, I “felt like I’d won all the awards.”
Dominic remembered the moment he learned he would be a soap opera star, which launched his career.
He recalled: “I clearly recall I was sitting on a friend’s sofa in a front room in London when I got a phone call for an audition and it dramatically transformed my life.
“I simply want to take in the night. It’s enough for me to know that I’ve been nominated for an NTA.
In order to eliminate the stigma associated with men talking about their feelings, the soap worked closely with Andy’s Man Club, a men’s suicide prevention organisation, on Paddy’s plot line.
Fans welcomed the suspenseful plotline, and Dominic acknowledged that Paddy’s storyline appeared to have increased awareness.
“I spoke to the nonprofit Andy’s Man Club, and they said that the plot increased their attendance levels,” he continued.
“It feels like a massive job done really if we’ve saved someone from that suffering, that level of depression, where they felt they needed to go and get help.”
Along with many of his other Emmerdale co-stars, including Chris Bisson, Emma Atkins, and Jeff Hordley, Dominic is nominated for the Best Serial Drama Performance award.
Kevin Mathurin and Lucy Pargeter from Emmerdale are more nominees.
