When Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) of Coronation Street is offered the chance to study in America, she will have to make a decision that will change her life in the next scenes.

Since agreeing to be a surrogate for churchgoers Mike and Esther Hargrave (Tom Lorcan and Vanessa Hehir), Summer has experienced a turbulent few years. She has battled an eating disorder that resulted in a diabetes diagnosis, an adolescent pregnancy, and kidnapping. Later, she postponed her studies after her boyfriend Aaron Sandford (James Craven) sexually assaulted her best friend Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney).

Summer views Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) as a father figure, and more recently, she was devastated to learn of his tragic diagnosis of motor neurone disease.

Next week, when she receives an amazing offer to study in the United States, things finally seem to be turning around.

Her happiness is short-lived, though, as she confides in her adoptive father Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) that she doesn’t think moving away is appropriate due to Paul’s terminal illness.

Billy puts Summer’s possible move to the back of his mind and goes all out for Paul on Valentine’s Day, knowing that it might be their last. He arranges a sidecar motorcycle ride, something they had not been able to do the previous year.

An old schoolmate of Paul’s who is at the restaurant on his stag do tries to push him up to dance, ruining their perfect evening together. Old romantic Billy also arranges for a Barbershop Quartet to perform in the bistro.

Billy gets angry and punches Paul’s old friend Benno, ruining their evening together.

Paul encourages Summer to leave Weatherfield later in the week after learning of her once-in-a-lifetime trip, saying he doesn’t want his condition to stop her.

Will she be able to get over her guilt about abandoning Paul and Billy, though?
