Midsomer Murders saw actor Daniel Casey star as DS Gavin Troy from the very first episode but he left after season seven – here is the real reason why.

Although fans of Midsomer Murders may come and go, Daniel Casey’s character DS Gavin Troy’s exit continues to be a topic of discussion for fans of the show.

Although the premiere date for season 25 of Midsomer Murders has not yet been announced, fans have been reliving their childhood memories as ITV has been broadcasting their favorite past episodes.

These reruns have reignited appreciation for original characters like DCI Tom Barnaby’s first sidekick, the ever-loyal DS Gavin Troy played by Daniel Casey.

Fans are often left pondering why Daniel Casey decided to bid farewell to his role as DS Gavin Troy after being an integral part of the show since its inception.

Why did Daniel Casey leave as DS Gavin Troy in Midsomer Murders?

DS Gavin Troy was central to Midsomer Murders from its first-ever episode, significantly contributing to the early acclaim of the show.

His tenure lasted until the seventh season when he was promoted within the force to Detective Inspector and moved on to Middlesbrough in 2003.

Gavin made a nostalgic return during season 11 for the wedding of Tom’s daughter Cully Barnaby, as portrayed by Laura Howard.

However, it wasn’t the producers’ decision but Daniel himself who chose to walk away from the long-running hit detective drama.

In a candid exchange with Saga magazine, the actor unveiled his reasoning: “I was just aware I didn’t want to stay with the same thing for too long and I wanted to branch out.”

Post-Midsomer Murders, now 52-year-old Daniel has kept busy, securing roles in a slew of television hits.

His IMDb page boasts a varied career with appearances in shows like Hex, The Bill, Marchlands, Doctors, Law & Order: UK, Casualty, Coronation Street, and Emmerdale, among others.

In 2017, Casey made his appearance in Albert Square as Tom Bailey, a romantic prospect for EastEnders’ Michelle Fowler (Jenna Russell).

However, as long-time fans will recall, Tom became obsessive and attempted to impose himself on Michelle when she didn’t reciprocate his feelings.

This was until her friend Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) intervened by striking him with a vase.

Threatened with the revelation of his true character at his workplace, Tom retreated and left in disgrace.
