EastEnders revisited a major storyline this week as David Wicks reunited with Cindy Beale and Ian Beale. But what transpired between the three of them decades ago?
David Wicks made his long-awaited return to EastEnders this week, quickly reuniting with iconic characters Ian and Cindy Beale. In the latest episode, they reminisced about their complicated history, with David expressing surprise at Ian’s reconciliation with his ex-wife Cindy.
As the trio delved into their shared past, tensions surfaced, particularly from Ian, who was concerned about the potential repercussions of David’s return on his current relationship. Their conversation hinted at the intricate dynamics among them, especially given David’s previous affair with Cindy and the shocking revelation that she had once hired a hitman to kill Ian. This dramatic backdrop sets the stage for an emotionally charged reunion, leaving viewers eager to see how these unresolved issues will play out moving forward.
David Wicks is Ian Beale’s half-brother, a connection revealed years ago in EastEnders. David’s mother is the iconic Pat Butcher, while Ian’s mother is Kathy Beale. They share the same father, Pete Beale, who passed away offscreen in 1993.
Despite their familial ties, David had an affair with Ian’s wife, Cindy. This affair took a dark turn when David discovered that Cindy had hired a hitman to kill Ian during their fling. As things escalated, Cindy proposed that David run away with her and her children before she was imprisoned, but he ultimately declined.
Following Cindy’s imprisonment, she was believed to have died, but it was later revealed that she was still alive. This shocking twist was brought to David’s attention during their recent reunion after more than 20 years apart, adding layers to their already complicated history.
As the pair caught up, David couldn’t hide his shock that Cindy and Ian were back together. He reminded her that the last time they saw each other she’d just had Ian shot and almost killed.
So why did Cindy try to kill Ian? David was losing interest in their affair so Cindy took drastic action to get rid of her husband. She did change her mind but it was too late and Ian was injured.
Ian had already found out at this point about his brother’s affair with his wife, after hiring a private investigator and seeing evidence. He vowed to take Cindy to court and get custody of their children, so at risk of losing them and David she made the ultimate betrayal and hired a hitman.
Cindy ended up fleeing while David stayed behind. Eventually Cindy was caught though and the rest is history. Fast-forward almost 30 years on from her offscreen demise, and David finally found out Cindy was alive the whole time. Fans are now convinced the pair could end up back together, amid Cindy’s affair with Junior Knight.
