During Zak Dingle’s (Steve Halliwell) wake at the Woolpack, a special Emmerdale episode centered on three of his children reflecting on his legacy.
Cain (Jeff Hordley), Sam (James Hooton), and Belle (Eden Taylor-Draper) shared memories, with Cain acknowledging that he didn’t grow up with Zak.
Sam revealed that Zak had named Cain the new head of the family, though Cain dismissed the idea, doubting his ability to take on the role.
Cain also confided about Moira’s (Natalie J Robb) brain tumor, admitting he was overwhelmed. However, the moment was broken when Sam awkwardly offered a hug, prompting Cain to tell him to “get off me, you fat egg.”
Belle reassured Cain that his strength reminded her of Zak, but Cain pointed out his flaws, like running away or acting out.
Meanwhile, Sam expressed guilt, feeling he’d failed to protect Lydia (Karen Blick) and Samson (Sam Hall).
Cain grew uneasy as they praised Zak, feeling it was dishonest to paint their father as flawless. He brought up the time Zak nearly killed him, shocking Belle, who Cain hadn’t realized knew about the incident.
Cain reflected on the past, sharing how deeply remorseful Zak had been after nearly taking his life. He admitted that his own behavior back then was reckless and chaotic, mentioning how he got a young Amy (Chelsea Halfpenny, Natalie Ann Jamieson) pregnant and caused turmoil throughout the village.
As tensions eased, Belle was moved to hear Cain compliment Sam’s parenting. He also acknowledged that, right or wrong, Zak had always done his best.
Lydia returned from the pub but gave the siblings space for their heart-to-heart. Belle soon admitted she regretted not leaving her abusive marriage to Tom King (James Chase) earlier, but Cain reassured her, reminding her that she had always been a fighter.
In a lighthearted moment, the trio sang Hillbilly Rock, a song last performed at Zak and Lisa’s (Jane Cox) second wedding.
As the episode neared its end, Cain delivered a heartfelt speech about Zak and the Dingle code, accompanied by nostalgic clips of Zak, with his voice echoing reflections on love and loyalty.
At Zak’s grave, Sam picked up their father’s iconic cap and humorously placed it on Cain’s head. Cain joked that he’d get Moira’s opinion on the hat, and the three siblings agreed to share the responsibility of leading the Dingles.
Rather than saying goodbye, they wished their father good morning, leaving Zak to rest peacefully. It was a touching tribute to both the character and actor Steve Halliwell, marking the 30th anniversary of the Dingles’ arrival.
