Coronation Street fans were heartbroken as a beloved soap icon bid farewell to the cobbled streets after a decade on screen.

Dolly-Rose Campbell, who portrays Gemma Winter, has taken a brief break from the role following her departure in Monday’s episode.

Her exit didn’t come as a surprise to viewers, given her involvement in several intense and emotional storylines in recent months.

Gemma, who hid her criminal past, was constantly busy in Weatherfield, raising quadruplets Aled, Bryn, Carys, and Llio with her husband Chesney.

The devoted mother was later diagnosed with post-natal depression following the birth of her four children.

However, Gemma chose not to address her health struggles and instead juggled multiple jobs to ensure her family stayed warm and fed.

Her troubles didn’t end there—she was left heartbroken by the death of her twin brother, Paul Foreman.

The character, portrayed by Peter Ash, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in September 2023.

Paul’s passing was so devastating that even fans of the show were brought to tears.

Gemma struggled to cope with the loss of her brother, leaving her family increasingly concerned about her mental health and wellbeing.

In the episode, Gemma resumed her job at The Rovers Return, despite Chesney warning her it was too soon after her pregnancy.

It quickly became clear that he was right, as Gemma felt overwhelmed and had to take a moment to cry in the pub’s back room.

Recognizing her need for a break, her other brother, Kit, suggested she take some time away and stay at a cottage in the Lake District, owned by a friend of his.

It could mean more bad news is on the horizon for the struggling family.
