Coronation Street star John Thomson appeared on Friday’s This Morning to discuss his return as Jesse Chadwick. The 55-year-old actor reflected on coming back to the cobbles after a 15-year absence and hinted at details regarding Gail Platt’s impending exit.

Jesse’s return coincides with Gail’s departure storyline, as actress Helen Worth bids farewell to the ITV soap after an impressive 50-year tenure.

Recently, shockwaves rippled through Coronation Street when Gail suffered a distressing heart attack during a family dispute over Jesse, as her children voiced their mistrust of him. During his appearance on This Morning, John shared exciting developments, saying, “Gail is leaving, yeah! So what happens is, I visit Gail in hospital after her second heart attack, and I’m allowed to say this… Gail proposes to me!” He added, “I think it’s a Leap Year, isn’t it? Gail proposes to me, but she’s heavily medicated, so I don’t know if her intentions are true!”

In the meantime, Gail’s daughter Sarah Platt, played by Tina O’Brien, has been suspicious of Jesse, believing he might have stolen money from her ex-boyfriend Damon Hay (Ciaran Griffiths). However, in a surprising twist, it turns out that the real thief was Sarah’s brother, David Platt (Jack P Shepherd), as reported.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Helen, 73, who has portrayed Gail on Coronation Street, is set to leave the show after five decades.

While the specifics of Gail’s exit storyline remain confidential, show bosses have indicated that it will be a highly “emotional” farewell fitting for such a significant character. Helen’s final scenes are expected to air later this year.

Reflecting on her decision to depart, Helen expressed, “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world. I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers, who were very kind and understanding.

I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in and week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors, and a brilliant crew. The past 50 years have flown by, and I don’t think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.”
