Award-winning screenwriter Jonathan Harvey has announced his return to Coronation Street after recently leaving the ITV soap.

At 56, Jonathan has contributed significantly to the show, writing 331 scripts over two decades since joining in 2004. He initially helped with Todd Grimshaw’s coming-out story and later became a regular writer.

Before working on Coronation Street, he created the popular series Gimme Gimme Gimme and wrote the play Beautiful Thing, which was adapted for film in 1996. The film featured future EastEnders actresses Linda Henry and Tameka Empson, who recently reunited with Jonathan during her absence from the BBC drama.

In early October, he shared on X that his last episode aired that night, featuring Paul’s funeral. He mentioned that Jan McVerry wrote the first half, while he penned the second, humorously assuring that everything would go smoothly.

This news followed his announcement about taking a break from the show. Jonathan is also working on a new musical titled Here You Come Again, featuring Dolly Parton’s music, which will debut at Salford’s Lowry Theatre later this month.

When asked about a potential return to soapland during an interview with I Love Manchester, he joked, “If they’ll have me!” He confirmed his plans to return next year, explaining that after twenty years, he felt it was time for a break. He initially thought he would only stay for a couple of years.

His witty writing style has made him a fan favorite, so this news will surely be well-received. Jonathan also reflected on his favorite writing experience, saying it was probably working on Corrie. He enjoyed the camaraderie of collaborating with other writers, which contrasts with the often lonely process of writing alone.

He reminisced about his time in the education sector, expressing that he missed the camaraderie of the staff room after leaving teaching. He feels that working on Corrie provides a similar sense of community.
