Ruby Fox-Miligan’s troubled past is set to resurface with the arrival of her father, Anthony, in Emmerdale, alongside her estranged daughter, Stephanie.
The character, played by Beth Cordingly, has recently bid farewell to one of her children, her son Nicky, who left the village for a new life with his boyfriend, Suni Sharma.
In a surprising twist, amidst speculation that Stephanie may already be in the village, Ruby’s father Anthony will make a dramatic entrance, with actor Nicholas Day stepping into the role in the Yorkshire-based soap.
Charismatic Anthony is set to make his debut later this month, and it will quickly become apparent that while he has softened in his old age, tensions with Ruby will flare up again, especially following the death of Ruby’s mother.
As long-time viewers may recall, Ruby was called to the hospital to visit her ailing mother in scenes aired in October 2024, only to learn that Helen had passed away just moments before her arrival. Before her death, Helen had visited Caleb (Will Ash) to inquire about Stephanie, his long-lost daughter.
The circumstances surrounding Ruby’s estrangement from her family have been gradually revealed. It was hinted that Ruby’s parents disapproved of Caleb, and after Ruby became pregnant—whether with Nicky or Stephanie—Helen and Ruby’s father pressured her to have an abortion. When she refused, they disowned her and threw her out. Ruby went on to start a new life with Caleb, where they welcomed their first child and later had a second.
While tensions are likely to arise due to Ruby’s complex relationship with her parents, many fans will be excited to see Nicholas Day make his foray into the world of soap operas, having become a well-known face on television.
After studying at Bristol University, Nicholas began his acting career in regional theatre and joined the National Theatre before landing his first television role in 1977. He has since appeared in a variety of roles on both the big and small screens, including a regular part as Mr. Archer in The Lakes.
Nicholas’s extensive television credits also include appearances in The Bill, Midsomer Murders, Doctors, Poirot, and Netflix’s The Crown, where he played former MP Jim Prior.
Additionally, actress Georgia Jay will join the Emmerdale cast as Ruby and Caleb’s estranged daughter. Smart and confident, Stephanie will display both her parents’ best and worst traits, with her reckless and narcissistic tendencies likely to cause a stir in the Dales. The dynamics of her reunion with her parents, after ten years apart, will be intriguing, especially in light of her brother Nicky’s departure from the village.
