Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) has been through a traumatic few weeks on Coronation Street.

After accepting a job abroad, Bethany decided to undergo liposuction surgery while she was away. Unaware of her plans, Daniel (Rob Mallard) was shocked to receive a call informing him that Bethany had developed sepsis as a complication of the procedure.

While she was hospitalized, Daniel and Sarah (Tina O’Brien) discovered that due to complications with Bethany’s health insurance, they would need to raise a large sum of money to cover her medical bills.

Fortunately, Gail (Helen Worth) managed to pay off the fees by taking out a bridging loan and arranging to sell her home.

Now back at home, Bethany is still struggling. The surgery and subsequent infection have left her adapting to life with a stoma bag.

In upcoming scenes, Daniel confides to a nurse during Bethany’s appointment that she rarely leaves the flat.

Later in the week, aware that she’s been isolating herself, Bethany tries to muster the courage to go out with Daniel to the pub for Paul’s (Peter Ash) space launch. However, Bethany soon finds her stoma bag leaking, leaving her humiliated and rushing out.

Reflecting on this storyline and Bethany’s upcoming challenges, Lucy Fallon said, “The next few months will definitely be tough for Bethany. Her biggest battle will be accepting that this was the result of her own decisions. I’m confident that eventually, she’ll come to terms with it and see that having a stoma doesn’t define her life as much as she feared, but it’s going to take a few setbacks to get there.”

Giovanni Cinque, Marketing & Campaigns Manager at Colostomy UK, commented, “We’re thrilled that such a popular UK show is highlighting the story of a character living with a stoma.

“Although public awareness has increased due to several celebrities sharing their experiences, the everyday struggles faced by the 200,000+ stoma users in the UK remain largely unknown. Raising this awareness is vital to ensuring we, as a society, understand the ways we can help improve their quality of life.

“We hope Bethany’s journey will play a big role in educating the audience and promoting a more Stoma Aware UK. Working with the Coronation Street team on this storyline has been a great experience for us.”
