ABUSER Joel was bashed to death with a crowbar and there are a surprising number of suspects

Joel Deering’s murder in Coronation Street was a truly unexpected twist.

The abusive character seemed destined for a long prison sentence, but instead, a crowbar sealed his fate.

This has kicked off the soap’s most gripping whodunnit yet, leaving fans to wonder: who really killed Joel Deering in Coronation Street?

Mason Radcliffe

Launching a whodunnit with a dramatic bang is one thing, but starting it with a collective “huh?” is something else entirely.

Mason was initially the prime suspect in Joel’s murder due to being found with a crowbar in his possession—an easy case for Weatherfield’s finest to solve!

However, it now seems Mason isn’t the killer—though if he were sentenced to life in prison, it wouldn’t exactly be a major loss.

Ed Bailey

Since his wife mysteriously disappeared—supposedly off to Birmingham without even saying goodbye or informing anyone—Ed has been somewhat directionless.

He spiraled back into his gambling habits, which provided some distraction, but then he lost his business and now works as a handyman when it suits him.

So, while he might be someone who could own a crowbar, is he really capable of murder?

He clearly loves his daughter, but does Ed actually have it in him to kill Joel?

Ronnie Bailey

There’s a bit of an element of just chucking in all characters to boost the numbers here because Ronnie is absolutely not a killer.

He’s one half of Corrie’s best couples in Debbie and Ronnie and we can’t have anything ruining that thank you very much.

Plus when has any real killer been undone by a SATNAV? I ask you!

Dee Dee Bailey

As a mild-mannered, devout Christian, it seems improbable that Dee Dee would be capable of murdering Joel.

However, as a heartbroken and furious girlfriend, humiliated by her cheating partner’s abuse of young women, she might very well have it in her to kill.

In fact, she believes she has already done so after hitting him with a crowbar—the weapon of choice in Weatherfield these days.

But given Dee Dee’s firm belief that she’s responsible, could that mean she’s not the killer after all?

Lisa Swain

Lisa is a unique character in soaps—originally introduced as a police detective and antagonist, but later humanized by the depth of the actress’s performance.

Once known as DS Swain, she was given a full backstory, including a first name, Lisa, a daughter named Betsy, a tragic past, and the possibility of a future romance with Carla Connor.

Given all this development, the odds of her character being wasted on killing someone like Joel Deering are incredibly low.

It’s far more likely that Lisa will be framed for the crime and eventually expose the true killer.

Carla Connor

Carla made a startling discovery while sneaking out of the factory on the night of Joel’s death— but was it Joel she found?

After all, he was suing her for defamation and had tormented her friend Roy Cropper.

Carla isn’t one to shy away from standing up to bullies, but could she really kill someone in cold blood?

While it’s hard to imagine her going that far, it’s clear that she’s hiding something significant.

Kit Green

The unusually tall police officer has a questionable relationship with the truth and was no stranger to Joel.

He had previously planted evidence to frame Joel for the murder of Lauren, something Joel was aware of.

The two had a heated argument the night of Joel’s death, but could he have been the one to kill him? Was it an accident, with his long arms unintentionally causing harm?

Max Turner

It seems improbable that young Max would have the capability to kill someone—especially after the whole incident where he unintentionally became involved in a terrorist situation.

However, he is certainly the type to try and take responsibility for someone else’s actions…

Particularly if that someone was…

Lauren Bolton

Of all the suspects, Lauren is probably the most likely to have killed Joel.

He groomed, abused and terrorised her – not to mention battering her over the head with a chair leg.

Then he tried to kill her baby and frame her for it – that’s enough motive for anyone.

And let’s face it of all of them Lauren’s the one who could absolutely pick up a crowbar and brain someone to death.

None of them…

Soaps love to give fans a long list of potential suspects, only to completely disregard it when the big reveal happens.

Think of Bobby’s murder of Lucy in EastEnders…

Could it be that Roy has finally lost it and killed Joel? Or perhaps Lily, eager for a storyline, took matters into her own hands and knocked him out with a crowbar, hoping to become the next killer in the Platt family?

None of them because… he’s alive!

In the world of soaps, there’s a universal rule: if you don’t actually see the body, they’re probably not dead.

In soap operas, even those seemingly killed at point-blank range can reappear years later in the lives of those they left behind.

With only a partial arm as evidence, it’s entirely possible that Joel is alive—maybe he manipulated someone into misidentifying a different body as his own, setting up an elaborate cover.
