Since the flashforward episode that hinted at an impending murder on Christmas Day, ardent EastEnders fans have become detectives.
In the episode, which aired in February, a collection of Walford’s most recognizable women—known as The Six—were shown huddled around a mysterious dead body, presumptively having killed him.
Since that fateful day, viewers have been searching for hints, and this is no different at the Metro.co.uk Soaps department. What do you mean nobody has set up a detective-style murder board to try and crack this case?
It’s clear that one EastEnders fan is on our level because they shared their theories on Reddit about why they think Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) will be the murder victim. After adding in some of the hints we’ve discovered for ourselves, we’re beginning to wonder if they might be right on the money.
The one that jumped out to us the most was a particularly important day, although they provided a plethora of justifications to back up their claim.
You would have noticed that the REEvisited episode with the flash forward moment was released on February 20 if, like us, you frequently visited the EastEnders YouTube channel to view it.
However, why is this significant? We can hear you sob!
To be precise, Phil Mitchell made his Albert Square debut on February 20, 1990.
Could the fact that this episode was published on this same date support the theory that he is the victim of the Christmas victim?
Maybe not, if you view it as a stand-alone piece of data, but add some additional hints, and we are confident that your mind will begin to work in the right direction.
By being married to Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) and Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean), being attacked by Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner), and being the father of Denise Fox’s (Diane Parish) kid, Phil has ties to all six of the people accused of the murder.
In addition, his son was the one who killed Suki Panesar’s (Balvinder Sopal) youngest kid, and he lost the Queen Vic to Linda Carter (Kellie Bright).
The fan also brought up his long-running battle with Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters), speculating that if Keanu ends up being Sharon’s husband, Phil would lose it and end up killing Keanu in self-defense.
Also mentioned was the possibility of an EastEnders revival due to Ross Kemp’s return to acting, and what better way to bring back Grant Mitchell than to kill off his brother?
If none of that was convincing enough, we’ve also done some independent research and found a big clue that you could have overlooked.
Stacey had a chat with Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) back in April while wearing red (you’ll understand the significance of this if you’ve read our helpful guide to all the flash forward clues! ), who said the line: “Who knows what will be this time next year?”
Since Phil was in the spotlight while she spoke, we couldn’t help but wonder where he may be in a year. Will he even be alive today?
Although the Redditor noted that Steve McFadden has recently taken several breaks from his work, we’re about to go one step farther.
Steve will be performing in a panto this Christmas, as was previously revealed, which means he’ll probably have to miss some EastEnders filming.
Or, if Phil has already passed away, will he?
What do you think now that you’ve considered all of the evidence? The body lying on the ground might be Phil. Those cufflinks are undoubtedly perfect for him.
