Coronation Street fans believe Audrey Roberts is on the verge of finding a new love interest, but many viewers have pledged to ‘switch off’ if the romance unfolds.

Coronation Street viewers believe they have figured out who Audrey Roberts’ new romantic interest is in the soap.

The iconic character, played by Sue Nicholls, has been a fixture on television since her debut in 1979. As the mother of Gail (Helen Worth), Audrey quickly became a cherished figure on the cobbles.

Over the years, fans have witnessed Audrey’s ups and downs, including her marriage to Alf Roberts (Bryan Mosley) in 1985 and his tragic death in 1999.

They have also seen Audrey become a great-grandmother to characters like Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) and watched her work alongside her grandson David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) in her hair salon.

Last year, Audrey was left heartbroken after her son, serial killer Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce), died. Much like her daughter, Audrey’s love life on the famous street has been full of drama, reports the Liverpool Echo.

After Alf’s death, Audrey entered a relationship with butcher Fred Elliott (John Savident) and even got engaged to former male escort and con artist Lewis Archer (Nigel Havers). Lewis eventually turned his life around to marry Audrey, but he passed away unexpectedly in 2019.

Since then, Audrey has been single, but soap fans believe that could change soon. Online speculation suggests that she and fellow soap icon Ken Barlow (William Roache) might be on the brink of a romance.

Coronation Street fans have taken to a Facebook fan page to discuss the possibility of Audrey and Ken becoming a couple, with the suggestion receiving mixed reactions from viewers.

One fan commented: “I’ve just had a wild thought. Or is it? … What if Audrey and Ken became a couple? They’re both single and about the right age for each other. What do you all think? Or is it a bad idea?”

The idea of such a pairing seemed to be unpopular among the show’s fans. One viewer expressed their disapproval, saying: “I’ve been thinking the same, but I really hope not!” Another firmly stated: “No way. If they go that route, I’ll stop watching.”

However, there were some differing opinions, as another fan remarked: “I’ve always wondered why they never got together, to be honest.” Someone else critiqued Audrey’s character, saying: “Audrey is too high-maintenance for Ken.”
