Weatherfield legend Ken Barlow feels unwell next week in Coronation Street and disasters strikes when he’s found collapsed on the floor at home by a concerned Bobby Crawford

A Coronation Street legend up ends in hospital next week.

At Stu Carpenter’s (Bill Fellows) birthday drinks Bobby Crawford (Jack Carroll) apologises to Ken Barlow (William Raoche) for getting Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) into trouble and notices Ken is unsteady on his feet.

Not feeling too well, Ken heads home. Concerned Bobby knocks on Ken’s door but when there’s no reply, he peers through the letterbox and is shocked to see Ken lying at the bottom of the stairs. Bobby calls an ambulance. Bobby returns home to collect his things.

Daniel and Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) visit Ken in hospital and Ken is dismayed to discover he will need round the clock care whilst he recovers. Steve visits Ken and assures him that the family will pull together and make sure he receives the care he needs to keep him safe in his own home and ken forces a smile.

Ken is one of Coronation Street’s original characters and December 2020 marked Ken’s 60th anniversary onscreen. He debuted in the soap’s first episode on 9 December 1960. Having appeared in the role continuously since that date, Willam is the longest-serving actor in a televised soap opera, and was honoured at the 2010 Guinness World Records ceremony for the achievement, having surpassed actor Don Hastings from the American soap opera As the World Turns.

He stated in 2010 that he had no plans to leave the role and would remain in Coronation Street for as long as the producers would have him. In November 2020, Roache was again presented with the Guinness World Record for the longest serving TV soap star in the world for his six decades in Coronation Street.

Long-term viewers of the ITV soap will remember that this isn’t the first time Ken has came tumbling down the stairs. Back in March 2017, Corrie centred a ‘whodunnit?’ story on the character, and it was revealed two months later that son Daniel Osborne (Rob Mallard) was the one who pushed him.
