A Corrie star faced an embarrassing moment when her stoma bag leaked in front of a crowd.

Bethany Platt, portrayed by Lucy Fallon, developed a perforated bowel and life-threatening sepsis after traveling to Turkey for a liposuction procedure that went wrong back in September. Drawn by an unmissable opportunity, Bethany’s surgery ended in disaster, requiring emergency intervention from doctors.

Her family was left in a panic over hospital bills after discovering that her medical insurance would not cover the expenses. Bethany has been hiding under loose-fitting clothes and distancing herself from Daniel due to her increased fears around intimacy.

The character is anxious that Daniel may be repelled by her stoma, but in an upcoming episode, he attempts to reassure her. Determined to lift her spirits, her devoted partner convinces Bethany to join him for a romantic date on the cobbles, yet things take an unexpected turn.

Bethany’s cozy evening at The Rovers turns into a moment of shame when her stoma bag suddenly leaks. Mortified, Bethany exits the pub in distress, with her co-star Rob Mallard supporting her during the emotional scenes.

Behind the scenes, Lucy consulted with P.E. teacher Natalie Tibble, who lives with inflammatory bowel disease ulcerative colitis and offered insight on coping with the condition to help Lucy with the challenging storyline.

Tibble’s comment: “Bethany’s embarrassment over her bag leaking is an experience many people with a stoma can relate to. I vividly remember when mine leaked in a café—it was devastatingly embarrassing.”

“You feel incredibly self-conscious; I remember running to the bathroom and bursting into tears,” she shared. Tibble noted that she always keeps extra bags and clothes with her to handle these situations.

Natalie added, “My stoma bag has leaked countless times since that first incident, even while on the school field where I teach, but I’ve come to accept that there can be tough days, and it’s alright.”

“I’ve got my trusted kit with extra clothes and stoma bags with me everywhere I go.” Coronation Street’s storyline with Bethany highlights the experience of the one in 225 people in the UK who live with a stoma. The ITV soap has also partnered with Colostomy UK to promote awareness.
