Charlie Lawson has shared his experiences of suicidal thoughts during his second marriage and disclosed that a fellow co-star supported him through that difficult time.

Coronation Street star Charlie Lawson has openly revealed that he came close to suicide following the abuse he endured from his ex-wife.

The 65-year-old actor described his life as a “living hell” due to the physical violence he experienced in that relationship. Known for his role as Jim McDonald on the popular ITV soap, Charlie admitted he felt trapped and saw no way out at the time.

He mentioned still carrying a scar from one incident and disclosed that he was prescribed medication for depression because of his home life.

“All I could think about was finding peace. I meant it. I would kill myself, end it all. I was in a very scary place,” he shared in a shocking admission.

In an interview with the Sun, Northern Irish actor Charlie Lawson revealed that even his wedding day was overshadowed by violence. He married Lesley Bond in 1999, and she passed away at the age of 55 in 2010.

Charlie discussed the hardships he endured during his marriage in light of his upcoming autobiography, That’s Life, So It Is.

He recounted an incident on his wedding day when he was accused of flirting with another bride who was set to marry at the picturesque Lucknam Park on the same day. He claimed that his fiancée slapped him “so hard” that he nearly fell over.

Despite the tumultuous moments, Charlie admitted, “I loved her to pieces, but she was very, very ill, bless her.” He explained that Lesley struggled with an addiction to prescription drugs, which fueled her paranoia about his actions.

Other troubling incidents included her attempting to attack him with scissors, leaving him with a noticeable scar on his hand. It was after one such event that he began contemplating suicide.

“I knew life could not go on like this,” he reflected. “Leaving her would break my heart, but if I wasn’t here, everything would be solved. She could move on with her life, and there would be no more pain.”

Charlie credited former Coronation Street co-star Eva Pope, who played Tanya Pooley, with helping him change his perspective. She urged him to come to her home, and he recalled how she “saved me that night” by listening to his concerns while comforting him.

Although Charlie returned to his wife after this episode, another violent incident led him to push her to the floor, prompting him to confront his fear of becoming violent and ultimately end the relationship.

Charlie is now happily married to his third wife, Debbie Stanley, 60, whom he wed last year. They have been together for 22 years, and she was with him when he learned of Lesley’s death.

She had fallen and lost consciousness before later passing away from hypothermia. Charlie shared that he scattered her ashes on her favorite beach in the Highlands.
