Since Chris Clenshaw took over as the EastEnders executive producer, fans have enjoyed watching how new characters and the return of beloved past ones shape life in Walford.

One of the most surprising comebacks in recent years was that of Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins). Viewers were stunned to learn Cindy was alive and now back on Albert Square. A special episode set in France revealed that Cindy had been living undercover as Rose Knight since her disappearance two decades ago.

The same episode confirmed she was reunited with Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) and living with their son, Peter Beale (Thomas Law).

Another recent return saw Jane Beale (Laurie Brett), one of Ian’s ex-wives, come back into the fold. Suspecting Ian was hiding something, Cindy tracked him to a remote cottage, where she found a bottle of wine and two glasses. She burst through the door, only to be confronted by Jane, who coolly introduced herself: “Hello, Cindy, I’m Jane.” It was a classic EastEnders cliffhanger moment.

David Wicks (Michael French) also returned to Walford, reconnecting with his on-screen daughter Bianca Jackson (Patsy Palmer). But he might need to come back soon, as Bianca has been taken hostage by the dangerous Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman).

With EastEnders on air for nearly 40 years, the balance of new storylines and nostalgic character returns brings excitement and a sense of continuity for fans.

Reflecting on his role last year, Chris Clenshaw shared his enthusiasm for more comebacks, with one particular name on his wish list. “Grant Mitchell, for more brotherly drama with Phil!” he told TV Times.

Grant, last seen in 2016 at Peggy Mitchell’s (Barbara Windsor) funeral, may not be out of the picture entirely. Actor Ross Kemp has hinted at a possible return, telling The One Show: “You can never say never… I did it for 10 years, I must have liked it! I loved the cast and the part, but I’m busy with other projects now.”

Rumor has it Ross may have a role in an upcoming special documentary celebrating the soap’s legacy for its February milestone. Fans are eagerly hoping for his return!
