EASTENDERS has announced plans for a major New Year stunt in celebration of the show’s upcoming 40th anniversary.

A mysterious message from one of the soap’s directors has sparked widespread speculation about what surprises the show might have in store.

Christopher McGill has been dropping hints on social media about what’s in store for Walford as the New Year approaches.

In his latest post, he suggested that one character might be reaching the “end of the pier.” Sharing a photo of a closed set for EastEnders filming, Christopher wrote, “Day Fourteen of @bbceastenders New Year Episodes #EndOfThePier.”

This cryptic message hints at a significant plot involving a pier. Teasing further, Chris also suggested that “railway lines” might play a part in the upcoming events.

One fan joked with the director, saying, “I hope you didn’t cross the dressed set line, Chris!” to which he replied, “Crossing all the lines. Railway lines too!”

It appears that these epic episodes took a total of two weeks to film, with Chris previously noting that his daily updates referred to the “monstrous block” of New Year episodes being recorded.

Amid numerous returns to the soap in recent weeks, the director hinted that more surprises could be on the way. During the filming, he mentioned, “Week Two on our monstrous New Year @bbceastenders episodes… A room packed (PACKED) with EastEnders icons.”

These New Year episodes will follow a “sad and tragic” Christmas in Albert Square. In a recent interview with RadioTimes.com, actor Shane Richie, who plays Alfie Moon, shared his thoughts on the unfolding Christmas Day storyline in the Queen Vic. He exclaimed, “As a fan of the show, I was like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe this! Stop!’”

He added that he kept flubbing his lines because he was so engrossed in the storyline. Shane teased that viewers are “in for a treat” this Christmas, hinting that the new storylines will leave BBC audiences in shock.
