Emmerdale has revealed the return of a Dingle after weeks of speculation on the ITV soap.
Thursday’s episode dropped on ITVX in the morning ahead of airing on TV as normal. The special episode sees the Dingles and other villagers gather to say goodbye to Zak Dingle after his sad death.
As Zak Dingle’s funeral approaches, spoilers have hinted that the family will be shocked by the return of a long-lost relative. Cast members suggested it would be a familiar face, someone viewers would recognize.
It was indicated that the character had previously appeared on the show, although their identity remained undisclosed. The name of the character has now been revealed, coinciding with the release of Thursday’s episode in the morning.
The Mirror has chosen not to disclose the character’s name to avoid spoiling the surprise for soap fans who are still tuning in later in the evening. One character seemed to be ruled out as the potential returnee on Wednesday night in a disappointing twist. Online speculation had suggested that Cain Dingle’s daughter, Debbie Dingle, might make a comeback after a cast list hinted at the possibility. Debbie has been living with her grandfather Zak in Scotland since leaving the village and hasn’t been seen on-screen for quite some time.
However, fans hoping for Debbie’s return will have to wait, as it was confirmed that she would not be attending the funeral and would not be coming back to the village. This means that Debbie is not the significant return taking place this week, despite the earlier speculation.
In a scene on Wednesday night, Cain called his wife Moira Dingle after arriving in Scotland. He shared the news that Debbie would not return home with them.
Moira was heard asking Cain, “So Debbie isn’t coming, then? I understand it’s her choice.” The call then cut off, and Moira shared the heartbreaking news with her son, Matty Barton.
When Matty inquired, “Is Debbie not coming back for the funeral?” Moira replied, “She told Cain she can’t face it; this has hit her hard.” This comes after Debbie’s mother, Charity Dingle, expressed concern for her daughter when she struggled to reach her after learning about Zak’s passing.
