Emmerdale fans were stunned this week as Ross Barton, played by Michael Parr, made a dramatic return after six years away.
However, viewers were left questioning the absence of Rebecca White, portrayed by Emily Head. Fans will remember that Ross left the village with Rebecca in 2018 to start a new life together. Michael Parr initially joined the beloved ITV soap in 2013, with Ross becoming known for his fiery relationships, especially with Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb). In 2017, he began a romance with Rebecca, although she also had an affair with Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) while Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) was in prison.
Rebecca later found out she was pregnant, uncertain at first who the father was until it was confirmed as Robert’s. Despite a turbulent romance, Ross and Rebecca rekindled things in 2018 following Ross’s traumatic acid attack.
Later that year, Ross left the village with Rebecca and her son, Sebastian, to start fresh in Liverpool. Now, he has returned to Emmerdale, though without Rebecca, revealing that she has passed away. Since Seb wasn’t his biological son, Ross does not have custody.
This revelation has fans speculating that Robert Sugden may return to claim his son after Rebecca’s death. Robert was married to Aaron but is currently in prison, serving time for manslaughter after attacking Lee Posner (Kris Mochrie), who had assaulted Robert’s sister, Victoria (Isabel Hodgins). The attack left Lee hospitalized, and he later died from his injuries.
Excited fans on Reddit have been discussing the possibility of Robert’s return to the series. One viewer suggested, “With Rebecca gone and Seb staying with relatives, what if Robert learns about it and decides to appeal his conviction using new information from Vic?”
Another fan speculated, “Even if it wouldn’t legally hold up, it’s a soap after all! With the ongoing Aaron drama, this could add a real twist.”
Another viewer seemed certain, saying, “I’m about 80% sure Robert’s set for a Christmas comeback. If not, I bet he’ll be back sometime next year. Killing off Rebecca hints at a storyline beyond just a breakup.”
Some even proposed a twist: “Given the time he’s served, he could be released on good behavior or something. This feels like it’s leading to Robert’s return.”
