Caleb Miligan (William Ash) is deeply troubled in Emmerdale, as he’s hiding a secret that could shatter his marriage. Before her death, he convinced Ruby’s (Beth Cordingly) estranged mother, Helen (Sharon Maughan), to transfer £100,000 into his account, promising to persuade Ruby to visit her.
However, Caleb never intended to follow through, as Helen had been cruel to Ruby in the past, cutting her off from the family because of her relationship with Caleb. What he didn’t anticipate was Ruby’s emotional reaction to her mother’s death, realizing she’d never have the chance to confront Helen about the painful choices she made.
“He’s extremely nervous,” William Ash revealed, “because the £100,000 transfer is likely to be exposed by Helen’s solicitor. Caleb is scrambling to figure out how to cover his tracks and keep Ruby from finding out.”
“When Caleb first went to see Helen in the hospital, his intention was to protect Ruby,” William Ash explained. “Helen had been vicious and cruel to Ruby, discarding her and cutting her out of her life, so Caleb thought he was doing the right thing by keeping Ruby away from her.”
However, Caleb was caught off-guard by Ruby’s devastation over her mother’s death. “He didn’t expect Ruby to be so deeply affected. When she tells him how much it hurt not getting the chance to make peace with her mum, and that Helen might have wanted to apologize before passing, Caleb feels a heavy sense of guilt,” Ash added.
Ruby’s emotional response has left Caleb fearing the consequences if she learns the truth—that he met with Helen before her death and accepted the money. “What scares him most is the unknown,” Ash admitted. “Her reaction to her mother’s death really took him by surprise, and if she ever finds out that he was involved, Caleb is quietly terrified it could mean the end of their relationship.”
“At this point, Ruby could easily walk away from Caleb and move in with Nicky (Lewis Cope) in San Francisco—or wherever his travels take him—seeing Caleb as toxic and someone she no longer wants in her life,” Ash explained. “His situation is incredibly precarious.”
Even if Helen’s solicitor never raises questions about the £100,000, Caleb won’t find peace. “He knows the truth could surface at any moment, and that thought will constantly haunt him,” Ash said. “It’s like living with a ticking time bomb. He’ll never be able to fully relax, knowing the secret is always hanging over him, ready to resurface and destroy everything.”
We’ve seen how close the relationship between Caleb and Ruby is, and William said that Caleb will go to any lengths to keep his marriage.
“I think Caleb has come to realize just how much Ruby means to him and how deeply he relies on her,” Ash explained. “She’s been there for him since he was 14 or 15, becoming his family when he had no one else. They’ve built a co-dependent relationship over the years.”
Losing Ruby would be a crushing blow for Caleb. “Even though he’s found a sense of belonging with Cain (Jeff Hordley), Chas (Lucy Pargeter), and the rest of the Dingles, Ruby is still his anchor,” Ash added. “She’s his rock, and without her, he’d be devastated. I think he’d do anything to keep her in his life.”
