Although he is most recognized for his role as Senior Sergeant Constable Cash Newman, Nicholas Cartwright was a six-year member of the Australian Army in his real life.

After quitting his previous job, the Home and Away star decided to give acting a go and was cast in a soap opera.

He has also had the chance to collaborate with his sister, who recently joined the show with her own role, thanks to his work on the show.

What did Nicholas do in the army?

Nicholas served as a rifleman for six years in the Australian Army.

During his service, he was stationed in East Timor and Afghanistan until he made the decision to attempt something else for his post-military life.

The actor thought about applying to be a firefighter or police officer, but ultimately decided to pursue his love of entertainment.

He said to Stuff, “After I got out, I was thinking about joining the fire department or the police, different government institutions that reminded me of the military.”

Then, as I settled more comfortably into my post-military civilian life, I found myself drawn to the creative arts and unsure of what to do with it as it didn’t seem like a feasible career.

“Then, one day, I just made the decision to go for a three-year course at Nida (the National Institute of Dramatic Arts) and bite the bullet.”

How did Nicholas land his Home and Away role?

2019 saw Nicholas graduate from NIDA, a theatrical school in Sydney.

He applied to join the Australian Federal Police and the New South Wales Police after COVID-19 struck Australia and made it harder for him to get employment.

He did, nevertheless, keep going to acting auditions, one of which was for Lewis, the murdering nurse in Home and Away.

Luke Arnold was cast for the role, but Nicholas is glad he was not cast because he went on to play Cash Newman.

Why did Nicholas decide to become an actor?

Acting comes naturally to Nicholas, as his sister Zara is also employed in the entertainment sector.

He announced on social media that he and his sibling would be starring in Summer Bay.

He added, “I’m not sure if you’ve seen the teaser, but this week on @homeandaway, my gorgeous little sister will be joining us!”

“On set, I’ve never had more fun. Between takes, it was practically impossible to look away from her and not smile broadly. It’s such a great time to work with family in this strange planet.

Prior to this, Zara acted with Teresa Palmer and Sam Neill in the drama film Skin Deep (2015) and the 2019 film Ride Like a Girl.
