TV favorites EastEnders, Coronation Street, and Emmerdale have all been on screens for 38, 63, and 51 years, respectively, and are all beloved soap operas.
As the BBC and ITV programs adopt drastic cost-cutting measures, several of Britain’s favorite soap opera performers are reportedly in danger of losing their jobs.
According to a source, some of the most well-known actors on Coronation Street, Emmerdale, and EastEnders who make at least £200,000 annually are looking to leave those shows.
An insider claimed that EastEnders executives were considering a “massacre” in a statement to The Sun.
According to them, Corrie, Emmerdale, and EastEnders are set to experience a carnage, and it won’t be nice.
“The major three have all received instructions to reduce their wage costs by up to 25%.
“The green rooms are now filled with anxiety over who might be getting the boot.
“Some veterans, especially the elder generation who all earn well over £200,000, are frightened they could be the next.
“Fear permeates the hallways. Anyone who receives a script notifying them that their time is over could be the victim.
They continued by saying that EastEnders had “dismal” viewing ratings following the purchase of an expensive new set.
Three years ago, the BBC soap opera spent £87 million on a new set.
Veteran actor Bill Roache, who has played Ken Barlow on Coronation Street since the show’s inception, is said to make £250,000 annually.
Jack P Shepherd, a David Platt actor who has been in the soap since 2000, receives the same salary.
Steve McFadden, who plays Phil Mitchell in EastEnders, is the BBC soap’s highest-paid actor, earning more than £200,000 annually.
Letitia Dean, who plays Sharon Watts, and Natalie Cassidy, who plays Sonia Jackson, both earn £150,000.
Emmerdale, the second-oldest soap on ITV, is said to pay Claire King, who portrays Kim Tate, and Chris Chittell, who plays Eric Pollard, more than £200,000 annually. Emma Atkins, who plays Charity Dingle, receives the same salary.
The sixth actor to chose to leave the serial opera in the past year was Matthew Wolfenden, who played David Metcalfe last week.
