Emmerdale’s Ella Forster was dealt a heartbreaking blow during Tuesday’s episode when she was told she wasn’t actually pregnant – and soap fans were not impressed

When Ella Forster from Emmerdale, played by Paula Lane, first appeared this year, it was clear that she was hiding a big secret. Eventually, in typical soap opera fashion, her great secret was revealed.

At the age of eleven, Ella—formerly Ruth—committed murder and was imprisoned as a result. She has been moving across the nation nonstop since her discharge.

Upon her arrival in the Dales in January, Ella hoped to finally find stability, particularly as she began a relationship with GP Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson).

However, when Liam discovered her past as a child murderer, he ended their relationship, unable to cope with it, especially after his own daughter Leanna’s (Mimi Slinger) murder.

Consequently, Ella left the village in June, but recently returned following a car accident. After some convincing from friend Mandy Dingle (Lisa Riley), Ella decided to return to the village – much to Liam’s dismay. In another surprising turn of events, Ella revealed to Mandy that she is expecting Liam’s baby.

However, during Tuesday’s episode (July 30), Ella received devastating news: she wasn’t actually pregnant. In heart-wrenching scenes, Ella was informed she had an anembryonic pregnancy, also known as a blighted ovum or silent miscarriage.

However, after Ella’s shocking revelation, fans couldn’t help but draw parallels with similar storylines in rival soap Coronation Street and EastEnders.

In ITV’s Coronation Street, viewers will remember that Toyah (played by Georgia Taylor) believed she was pregnant, only to discover it was sadly cancer. Meanwhile, over in Albert Square, Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) recently received the news of a blighted ovum while trying to conceive.

Fans took to social media to express their frustration over the repeated plotlines. One viewer on X commented: “Can these soap writers not come up with any original ideas?”

“First Sonia in #Eastenders has a blighted ovum. Now Ella in # Emmerdale has had a blighted ovum,” they continued. Another posted: “Ella like Toyah on #corrie she thought she was prego as well.”

On a Reddit thread, a third user wrote: “Character is pregnant but when they go to hospital there is no baby, seems a familiar storyline for some reason Toyah Corrie.”
