Lesley Dunlop is set to depart from her role as Brenda Walker in Emmerdale after more than 16 years on the ITV1 soap.

According to The Mirror, the iconic soap star will be leaving the show, but Emmerdale has not commented on the matter when approached, as the soap generally refrains from discussing cast contracts.

This year has been particularly difficult for Brenda, who faced a turbulent time in her relationship with Eric Pollard after his Parkinson’s diagnosis. In real life, Dunlop and co-star Chris Chittell, who plays Eric, have been married off-screen since 2016.

The year started tragically for Brenda, as her surrogate son, Heath Hope, was killed in a car accident on New Year’s Day, caused by teen Angelica King losing control of the vehicle. Fans were later surprised when Brenda was absent from Heath’s funeral, with the show explaining that she was ill and unable to attend.

Dunlop joined Emmerdale in 2008 after a successful television career, with notable roles in Doctor Who, Where the Heart Is, and May to December.

Other departures are also on the horizon for Emmerdale. Reports indicate that Roxy Shahidi, who portrays Leyla Harding, is expected to leave in a dramatic storyline that could see her character killed off. Daisy Campbell, too, has confirmed that her character, Amelia Spencer, will be written out before Christmas.

Reflecting on her exit, Dunlop shared, “It wasn’t my choice to leave Emmerdale, and it was a shock at first. Being part of Emmerdale is all I’ve ever known. I’ve grown up with the soap, and leaving feels daunting.”

Earlier this year, Jurell Carter, who played Cain Dingle’s son Nate Robinson, also exited the show. He recently announced a new voiceover role for Sephora’s Christmas advertising campaign.
