Emmerdale star James Moore, who plays Ryan Stocks, and his wife Sophie Edwards are still reeling from the emotions of their recent wedding. The couple, who tied the knot in a “magical” ceremony at Cheltenham’s Manor by the Lake, were joined by 100 guests, including family, friends, and co-stars from the ITV soap. For James, who has cerebral palsy, the wedding was a moment he feared would never happen.
During his heartfelt evening speech, James shared his journey growing up with a disability, expressing how he never thought he would find love or get married. Sophie, moved by his words, said, “It was one of the highlights of the day. It tugged on everyone’s heartstrings, showing that love is for everyone.” James, 32, and Sophie, 27, are still soaking in the afterglow of their wedding, describing the experience as surreal.
The couple met on Bumble five and a half years ago, and after a two-year engagement, they were determined to have their dream wedding in autumn. “We didn’t want anything traditional,” says James. Sophie’s non-negotiable was a bouncy castle, and James’ bright purple suit added a personal touch. The ceremony was also made extra special by James’ childhood friend Amy, who was his best woman. “I’ve known Amy for years, and she’s always been there for me,” James explains.
The couple went all out to personalize their wedding, from a Lego station for guests to create their own figurines to a donut wall inspired by their favorite show, The Simpsons. “We did everything ourselves with James’ family,” Sophie says, referring to their handmade decorations, including knitted pumpkin centerpieces and DIY confetti.
James and Sophie were also committed to ensuring the ceremony was accessible. James, who uses a wheelchair, found the venue to be fully inclusive, which made the day even more special. “It’s so important that marriage is for everyone, regardless of ability,” James says. The day was emotional, with Sophie walking down the aisle to McFly’s “All About You” and a speech from James that moved everyone to tears.
Guests, including Emmerdale stars Emma Atkins, Mark Charnock, and Dominic Brunt, helped keep the atmosphere lively. “They are a whole lot of fun,” James laughs, reflecting on their dancing and energy.
James and Sophie’s love story has inspired many, especially those in the cerebral palsy community. James is moved by the messages he receives, with many sharing how his story has touched their lives. “It means a lot when people tell me how my journey inspires them,” he says. Sophie admires James’ determination and attitude, adding, “He never lets anything hold him back. It’s one of the reasons I fell in love with him.”
The couple, who are planning a honeymoon to Florida next year, are also focused on the future, hoping to buy a house and start a family in a few years. “We want to save for a house first, then we’ll think about starting a family,” James shares. For now, they’re enjoying life as newlyweds, looking forward to the adventures ahead, even if Sophie needs to make room for more than just James’ vinyl records.
