Actress Michelle Collins is the one with all the juicy details about EastEnders legend Cindy Beale’s upcoming dramatic return to Albert Square.
The fabled baddie Cindy has spent the previous 25 years in witness protection because everyone in Walford thought she had passed away in childbirth in 1998.
This revelation will undoubtedly make her return combustible as word of her secret existence spreads around Albert Square.
Not to add that she will meet her family, whom she raised under the guise of Rose Knight, for the first time in nine years when they move into her former neighborhood.
Cindy, however, is unaware that her ex-husband George (Colin Salmon) and their two kids Gina and Anna (Francesca Henry and Molly Rainford) reside in Albert Square before she even lands in London. What then prompts her return?
‘Something happened in France and Peter went back, so she decides that she’s going to go back to the Square — without telling Ian — so she grabs her passport and her things and decides to go back to get Peter,’ actress Michelle Collins said. ‘Because she’s gotten very close to Peter over the last year, and she doesn’t want to lose him. She believes that since witness protection is no longer necessary, she will take the chance of returning.
She wants to see more than just Peter though. Cindy seizes the chance to track down her arch-enemy Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) when Peter is sidetracked by a distressed call from Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt).
“I believe Kathy will be the first person she meets, and I think you can probably guess how that will go!” Between the daughter and the mother-in-law, there has never been any affection lost.
Michelle admits that she is “terrified and excited” to be returning to the area where Cindy grew up after experiencing so much during her time abroad.
The scenes, the emotion, the strength were all so masterfully written. She’s quite traumatized but also a really strong character, despite the fact that she’s been through a lot and a lot has happened to her. She experiences a whole emotional roller coaster as a result.
She is suddenly learning about family members she was unaware of here. She was unaware that George and the girls were in the room. That really shocks me.
“All these things suddenly appear out of nowhere, one after the other. It truly is an emotional rollercoaster. Which is ultimately what you want to be as an actor. You want a challenge, and it definitely provided one.
George, who is anxious to know where Cindy has been for the past nine years, soon meets Cindy in person.
Cindy and George are reuniting, but may this jeopardize her partnership with Ian? Are we dealing with a possible love triangle?
“I think if those things didn’t happen, I’d be disappointed!” Michelle disclosed. “Cindy wasn’t really planning to return and become a nun, was she? I’m not sure. I won’t reveal too much here.
In heartfelt scenes, Cindy will also have to make apologies with George and her daughters Anna and Gina.
She hasn’t seen them in a while, and I honestly find it to be very moving. When I was filming those sequences, and I believe they were, I felt quite moved. Must be incredibly challenging.
“It’s difficult not to see your kids for nine years,” she said after being forced to leave. And she’s going to have to put in a lot of effort for people to comprehend why she did it.
There will undoubtedly be drama in the future, as Michelle hinted, even though many details of Cindy’s homecoming are yet unknown.
“You can definitely anticipate seeing some of the old Cindy return. In addition, I believe that if the old components were missing, people could be a little disappointed. She’s hardly the kind of person who would stay in and knit, in my opinion.
She was a persona that, in a way, women despised but kind of yearned to be because of the way she acted.
In an era when women on television weren’t really portrayed in that way, she was unapologetic. I believe she got away with murder as a result. [Laughs].’
