This week on Coronation Street, David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) comes face-to-face with the man who killed his late wife, as Clayton Hibbs (Callum Harrison) makes a tense return to the soap.

Clayton, who hasn’t appeared on the show in four years, is serving time for the murder of Kylie Platt (Paula Lane), which occurred back in 2016. Adding to the complication, he’s also the son of Shona (Julia Goulding), David’s current wife.

Clayton’s reappearance is set to create major turmoil for both Shona and David, who are already dealing with significant changes in their lives, especially as David’s mum, Gail (Helen Worth), considers selling her home and leaving Weatherfield.

If you need a refresher, here’s a rundown on this dangerous character’s backstory…

Who is Clayton Hibbs in Coronation Street?

Clayton made his first appearance on Coronation Street in 2016 as the stepbrother of Macca Hibbs (Gareth Berliner) and an old acquaintance of Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell) and Callum Logan (Sean Ward).

He quickly became a troublemaker, causing issues for Gemma at the Prima Doner kebab shop where she worked, and later attempting to steal from the till. During a confrontation, Clayton knocked Gemma unconscious, and when her friend Kylie tried to intervene, Clayton stabbed her in the chest before fleeing the scene.

Kylie tragically died in her husband David’s arms as he held her on the cobbles in a heartbreaking moment.

In one of Coronation Street’s most emotional scenes, David cradled his dying wife, Kylie, on the cobbles as she bled to death in his arms.

In the aftermath, David, devastated by her death, would later attempt to kill Clayton, but the teenager was eventually arrested and sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum of 15 years.

David eventually found love with Clayton’s mother, Shona, but was rocked by the revelation of her son’s identity. Despite the shock, David and Shona overcame the challenges and married in 2019.

Clayton last appeared in 2020 when Shona visited him in prison following her memory loss. Since then, both she and David agreed to never speak of him again, with Shona even disowning her son. However, last week, David received a shock when he was contacted by Clayton through both an email and phone call from prison.

What happens next?

David decides to keep Clayton’s attempts to reach out to both him and Shona a secret from his wife, choosing instead to visit Clayton in prison.

This decision leads to major consequences later in the week when the police inform Shona that Clayton has been hospitalized after attempting to take his own life.

Shona is left frantic and desperate to see her son, but the big question remains: will David finally reveal the truth about his efforts to block Clayton’s contact?

What has been said about Clayton Hibbs’ return in Coronation Street?

Actress Julia Goulding recently spoke out about the intense fallout that could occur when Shona learns the truth about David’s secret. She revealed that Shona could feel deeply betrayed by her husband, particularly when she discovers that he has been gaslighting her and played a role in Clayton’s suicide attempt.

Julia explained, “When Shona finds out her husband has been gaslighting her and had a part in Clayton trying to take his own life, I dread to think what she’s going to do. But I don’t think she’ll take it lying down!”

She went on to say, “There’s going to be a lot of anger and pain, and the possibility they could destroy each other. Trudging through treacle is probably a good analogy.”
